Physical Activity After Your Heart Event
You probably have been told that regular exercise is important for good cardiac health. It can lower your blood pressure, help control diabetes, improve cholesterol, contribute to weight management and combat anxiety and depression.
But in spite of all these benefits, many people find it difficult to maintain good exercise habits. Maybe they don’t know how or where to get started. And perhaps they lack confidence to do it safely, given what they have just experienced.
The answer for many people has been the Take Heart and Breathe Well program. It was started over fifteen years ago specifically for cardiac patients. It now operates in five community recreation centres in Greater Victoria (Henderson, Saanich Commonwealth, Panorama, Sooke and West Shore Parks) as well as in recreation centres in Duncan and Campbell River. There is also a program at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.
The program was designed to provide supervised exercise sessions twice weekly in a safe environment. You get the advantage of having access to professional equipment and supervision. And you will not feel intimidated being in a “gym” because you will be doing your program among other cardiac patients.
